Cap-Op Energy opens the first Program of Activities (PoA) for pneumatic instrument conversions in British Columbia, potentially saving hundreds of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Oil and Gas producers with distributed facilities in British Columbia are now able to join Cap-Op Energy's clients in this aggregation project so long as they have converted or retrofitted any pneumatic controllers or pumps to low or no bleed devices after November 29, 2007. Cap-Op Energy's next verification cycle to extract the carbon offset value from these projects begins in September 2013 and closes in January 2014.
Cap-Op, the premier aggregator of energy efficiency emission reduction offsets for the Oil and Gas industry, has built a cloud based platform, to track, aggregate, quantify and develop the GHG savings. Cap-Op Energy utilizes the Distributed Energy Efficiency Project Platform(DEEPP) to lower the barriers for industry to conduct energy efficiency projects, by lowering quantification costs up to 50%, and by creating predictable offset revenue. The DEEPP addresses the challenges associated with the development, aggregation, tracking, and financing of carbon reduction and fuel gas savings projects.
Pneumatic controllers used in the natural gas industry are powered by natural gas to regulate process variables such as pressure, flow rate, and liquid level. As a part of normal operating procedure, pneumatic devices release or bleed natural gas to the atmosphere and therefore are a major source of methane emissions. High bleed controllers, such as Fisher 4150, Fisher 546, Fisher L2, Fisher 2500, Fisher 2900 and Norriseal 1001 can be replaced or retrofitted with low-bleed alternatives such as the Fisher C1, Fisher i2P-100, Asco Solenoid Valve, Mizer Retrofit kit or Fisher i2P- Retrofit Kit to achieve an equivalent function with significant savings in natural gas usage.
This offset aggregation Program of Activities allows Oil and Gas producers with operations in British Columbia to cost-effectively upgrade their distributed facilities by converting high-bleed pneumatic controllers to low-bleed (or self-contained) controllers, while providing functionally equivalent results and earning emission reduction offsets.
Once the aggregated offset project is developed, third party verification is required to ensure the claim of emission reductions is real. Project verification is an independent audit process performed by a certified verification body and a required step in achieving real GHG offsets under the BC Emission Offset Regulation. The verification process provides qualified third-party assurance that the greenhouse gas assertion is complete, correct, and transparent in all material respects.
